Is Target the new MYER?

A visit to Target stores over the last few weeks and especially today has left me seriously considering not shopping there at all.The prices in the store are no longer affordable to the average worker/person. The layout of the stores is also changing. The clothes are labelled not only in 8, 10, 12,  but 6, yes ladies size 6  and their new range of  clothes now don’t come in sizes bigger than a 14. L, M, S and depending which section you are in 30″ 32″ etc.The clothes are so tight and small they think the average person is the size of a child. No offence intended to size 6 Ladies but the average size of Australian women is 14-16. You can’t go in there now and buy an outfit without having to layby part or all of it The manager at one of the Target stores I spoke to said they are now stocking name brands other than Target brands and are trying to be a more upmarket store. The reason the news range of clothing does not come in sizes bigger than 14 is because they are appealing to the youger generation. Hello  I’m 43 and the clothes they are now displaying were in fashion when I was younger and would love to wear them.Well Iv’e got news for them. If I wanted to pay extravegent prices like they are now charging I’d go to Myers or David Jones. I will be shopping elsewhere. My small local clothing shops will be getting my money from now on.

If Target is the new Myer, what is Myer?

Appealing to the younger generation ? Since when is (just turned) 32 old ?? I used to be a size 8, 10, and 12…but after having my second child 9 months ago I am now a 14-16. Does giving birth and turning 32 suddenly make me old and unworthy of pretty clothes ? Shame on you Target !

When I worked for Target years ago they told us there was going to be a deliberate strategy to ‘upgrade’ Target to be the new Myer and Myer would become the new David Jones. It seems to have worked - much to the disappointment of its customers it would seem. I’m with you Skyhooks - shop at the local smaller strips and see how you go - and your’re supporting the little guy (or girl)! Also, there are shopping options online which could be worth a look - my mum’s a fan of Ezybuy and she’s a size 16. The clothes are classic without being daggy and its easy to exchange if the size/style doesn’t fit…:)

I’m 33 and a size 12 and have bought clothes from Ezibuy, but everything other than lingerie has been sent back because it didn’t fit. It’s hard to buy from a mag instead of seeing it on a rack and trying it on. If Myer thinks it’s getting anywhere close to the clas of DJs, it’s got some work to do. It’s going backwards, if anything, and perhaps that’s why Target’s increased prices and different sizing is noticeable.

Oh please. I say good on Target. I love being able to go there and buy size 6 clothes that fit me.

Before you snap at me in disgust, think for a minute. Try being a size 6 and finding something decent to wear let alone fit in a country town that has only Kmart, Sussans and Rockmans … oh and those shops for larger people. It’s impossible. I get sick and tired of never being able to find anything. It’s riduculous that many retailers have ’sized down’ size 10 or even 12 clothes and labelled them as size 8. I try on pants and they fall off me! I have to look professional.

Sorry guys, but I’m 40 have two children and work full time (I’m a doctor). I look after myself and exercise. I am short (157 cm). I am not alone - there are plenty of other similar sized women around. It really irks me when those of us who look after ourselves and are not part of the obesity epidemic are singled out. Australian women should not be an average of size 16. It is unhealthy. It can be fatal. Get a grip.

I’m not knocking anyone who is a size 6 but your comments about being size 16 and obese are ridiculous. I am 44, 170cm tall, have had 3 chidren and been a sports person all my life and I take a size 14( this is the average size for Australian women) not size 8 or 10. I have to get a size 16, mostly 18 in a top from Target as their clothes are so small. I can go to KMart or Big W and get into a size 14 easily so it depends on the store. As for your size 16 comment as being unhealthy I know several people who are fitness fanatics and eat very healthy but are a size 16 when buying certain clothes. For a doctor you don’t seem to know too much about the average size of Australian women considering the debate has been going on for nearly 2 years as to how the sizing chart for Australian women is very unrealistic and needs a complete overhaul. The debate is raging as the average Australian woman is a size 14 not 10 and 12 as it stands now.I understand it irks you that you think you are being singled out but lets be real here you are not being singled out for looking after yourself, nor because you are obese. You obviously don’t go to the same stores as most others because if you did you would see that nearly every time clothing is on sale at the big major retail chains all you find left are sizes 6, 8 & 10.Try it and see. Go to Target try on a size 6 top then go to Big W KMart Millers Katies Susans Portmans and see the difference in the sizing

ok you are the first person i have met who is 40 and a size 6. im sorry but i find it hard to believe that there are ‘plenty’ of others like you. shops are going to sell clothes that fit the majority of people. and if you think size 16 is unhealthy, i think size 6 is unhealthy. and im sure many others would agree with me.

Well ladies…do you want to have a MANS point of view?

Too bad if you don’t ’cause I’m going to GIVE you one:

Firstly: Clothing sizes are so “variable” these days that
actually quoting a “size”, does NOT really give an accurate idea of the “size” of a Lady (Her figure shape and size, I mean!). It would be MORE appropriate I think, to actually quote ones “measurements” when trying to get across to the/a
reader…just what “shape” and “size” one is!

In other words: List your Bust measurement, then your waist measurement, then your measurement around the hips!

Add to that your height NOT ONLY IN CENTIMETRES, but in feet and inches as well…saves people from having to covert! I for one just cannot picture a person’s height from a measurement listed in centimetres…feet and inches…EASY!

Now: Size 6 - To me…SOUNDS skinny, almost ANOREXIC!
    BUT…it may NOT be!?

    And: Size 14 - 16 (certainly 16) SOUNDS considerably
overweight…unhealthily so and at least BORDERING
on obese! BUT…it may NOT be!?

If I have offended anyone…SORRY! But, clothing “sizes”
simply do NOT give an ACCURATE idea (at least not any MORE!)
of the “shape and size” of any given Lady!

If you want to abuse me for my oipnion…GO AHEAD…I’m tough…I can take it! In fact, I would WELCOME your opinions Ladies!

Good on target for stocking size 6, but they need to stock 14, 16, 18s and so on. I’m not sure I believe that the average Australian woman is size 14-16… women look a lot more varied than that to me. More stores need to stock a wider variety of sizes, from the very small to the very big. Sizes are pretty ambiguous any way, when I worked in retail I found some women who would come into the store asking for a size 16 and *think* mmmm no you’re bigger than that, but then they did infact turn out to be a 16, and then there were women who asked for 16 but whom I thought were smaller than that, but they too were a 16. It’s about where the weight is, what the weight is (muscel or fat?) and how a person carries themself.

I’m size 6 in tops and size 4 (not that any one makes size 4, I’d also like to note here that I’m 20 years old and have not had children, but most girls my age aren’t size 6 either… it is very small) in the hips… I have incredibly narrow hips, and yes, I’m quite thin too, - but even if I gained weight, that wouldn’t change my tiny bone structure. It’s frustrating not being able to find your size no matter what size you are… Bras are impossible for me to find, I need an 8 D… 8s are starting to come out on the market more, but not in a D cup, apparently little thin women don’t have breasts? So I have to spend $70 on a bra at Bendon. It sucks, clothing stores need to wake up and see the demographics they’re missing out on by not stocking a variety of sizes.

Real women come in all shapes and sizes. Size 16 may well be overweight for one person, but the perfect weight for another, just as size 6 may be too thin for one person, but the perfect weight for some one else. I’m angry for all the women who can’t find nice affordable clothes because the sizes only go up to 12, but don’t take it out on the on the very small women out there who need a size 6, we need to unite on the issue.

Yeah its fair enought to complain about the prices of target, it has gone up, but they do stock the 12-18 size clothes, the thing is that everyone has gotten fatter and are buying these ones so there are consequently less on the rack.

Alicedoc has it right. Just because the average australian woman is a 16 doesnt mean its healthy or right. 10 years ago it used to be an average of a size 12, but now were all fatter, being average doesnt mean its normal.

i used to be a 14 boarder line 16, and i found clothes shopping hard cause i was boarderline and larger. i’ve lost weight and down to a size 12 (nearly 1o yay), and it was hard to do but worth it. Just because its an average size (16) doesnt mean i have to be it.

to skyhooks, yes i know its hard buying clothes at target, and you got the right idea in abandoning it. I did. went else where more afordable.

I think everyone has made good points especially our man commenter (yay), but everyone needs a wake up call in one way or another. and yes that probably means me too.
