Who flew into Target to get a Stella McCartney bargain(not)
Published 1 year, 8 months ago in Shopping.I was at the Epping shopping centre today and as always ducked into Target for a quick look and to grab a bargain. BARGAIN MY A—-. I could not believe the price of her clothing in a store that is suppose to be an affordable place to shop. Not only was the range of her clothing sooo expensive $200,oops in the TV ads they said not $400 not $300 under $200, they were right it was $199 for a trench coat. I then went over to the Hot Options section and a trench coat nearly identical was $79. As for the news on telly tonight saying the racks were cleared out so quickly, what a joke. I went into the change room to try on a top and when I came out there was a pile of clothes waiting to be put back out on the racks, all Stella McCartney. People were trying them on but not buying any, they left them in the change rooms. The poor girl in the fitting room had to call for help. The lady who did the ordering for Target came to the change rooms and took them all back to the rack. I listened intently as a well dressed lady (either a Target or Stella McCartney rep) was telling all who would listen that they had to keep going out the back to fill up the rack it was all selling so quickly. She picked the wrong customer in me to look at while she was explaining all of this and when she asked me did I want to try on anything from the rack I told her” I did’nt need the rack as there was that much in the fitting rooms that people had left behind there was plenty in there for me to try on. I have never seen a face turn red so quickly. So all this hype over a range of clothing,it is ridiculous. A couple of other customers who had also been in ear shot told me they had been watching people load up their arms with as much as they could hold but those same people left with nothing.Could this be a case of ‘trying to let people think you are well off financially or a case of keeping up with the Jones’s?’ Jut for the record comparison. SM black pants $180 Target $39.95,SM T-shirt $90 Target $29.95. By the way I bought a cool top for $29.95 and then left.

Great insight from the coal face, skyhooks. Ta.
I sooo won’t be going in to TARGET to spend $180 on a pair of pants. I wonder why people were leaving the clothes in the change room?
Is that where shoppers read the price tags? Or might they have not fit well? Or perhaps one needed to try various sizes as the SM versions did not correspond to the regular Target sizes?
I saw a preview of some of the range on one of the morning shows and they said that one particular item (a top I think) was very affordable at *only* $79.99 (or something). Sorry, that’s not affordable for me, even if it IS from Target. Personally, I didn’t like anything I have seen, and there is no way I’d be at the shops even to LOOK at it, regardless of who designed it !
If Stella McCartney’s name was - say - Stella Smith, I doubt very much if even target would have picked up her designs. Have yet to see anything vaguely innovative or interesting from this designer.
While being Paul McCartney’s daughter might have helped give Stella a leg up in the fashion world she’s only made it into the designer elite because she’s TALENTED. To suggest otherwise golden1 reeks of jealousy and bigotry based on financial background. And $80 is cheap for a designer top, let alone a piece created by one of the biggest names in fashion today. You wouldn’t catch me buying designer clothes at Target no matter the price but the McCartney coup must rate as one of the most brilliant pieces of marketing from an Australian retail company in years. Have you noticed all the positive publicity they have generated? Have you noted how the media commentators are now writing about how Target has cleverly repositioned itself? Judging by the hundreds of fashion-conscious customers who raced to Target yeterday obviously many, many consumers have.
Jealousy and bigotry? No. simply a calm assessment of of the offerings of Stella McCartney for some years. I do not think she is a good designer, I am entitled to that opinion and I am not alone in it.
havn’t seen the stuff myself but some work collegues described them as ugly with too many bows
And just for the record solomongrundy innovative and interesting marketing is not the same thing as innovative and interesting design.
vivavoce, have to agree with your workmates. I didn’t personally like anything either. Forget the price for a minute and look at the clothing. All bows and dangley bits, everything was drab looking.Dull greys, cacky colored pale lemon (it looked like the color of clothes when you wash whites with darks), navy and black. Now bring the price into it and the same style black and navy pants in Target brand was just as nice ,some even better at a quarter of the price.Solomongrundy in regards to your comments, she might be talented in your eyes but I just didn’t get it.No I’m not jealous I couldn’t care less, good luck to her.You say $80 is cheap for a designer top it is only cheap if you need it,will use it, or like alot of people did went to Target and grabbed what they could to double their money on ebay.I’m afraid the “old” Target is gone now and we can expect to have clothing at ridiculous prices just because they have some big names in their store. I want the old Target back where I could buy a whole outfit including shoes and accessories for under $150 not just a half a leg of trousers for $90.
